SZULGIT/WABIK
Testing is an improvisation that was recorded during the creation of a spatial and sound Popolytope, brought into being as part of the concert: MM#58 Iannis Xenakis – inspirations in sound and space (13.12.2017) at CK Zamek in Poznan.
The structure, sound and lighting of the installation precisely referenced the audiovisual shows of the composer/architects Polytope de Montreal and Polytope de Cluny. However, the spatial creation was not one of the layers but fulfilled the function of an instrument, constructed from 13 steel wires/strings 12-16 m in length, out of which sound was elicited using a bow.
Three amplified strings were used in the concert, to each of which a resonator with a contact microphone was attached. The crux of the installation was a reversal of the formulaic proportions of instrumentalist to instrument. The audience and the musicians both were in a sense inside the instrument's spatial form, perceiving it rather in the context of objects at the borderline between architecture and sculpture.
Fryderyk Szulgit and I were attempting to test the sound of one string using guitar effects; in the end, we chose instead to use a more authentic, albeit amplified, sound. The material that emerged from the project inspired us to continue working in the same direction as what we recorded on 11 December 2017.
